Summer of Success!

By: Maddie Toro, Literacy Program Manager

We are beyond excited for a summer filled with fun and learning! At CFSN we understand how important it is for our students to retain all that they’ve learned over school year to avoid summer slide, as well as learn some new things over their summer break and have fun while doing it!

Summer Plans at our Detroit and Pontiac Sites

Our Summer of Success will be packed with games and activities to support building community and connection among our students as well as read alouds and math lessons. We have a number of experiences this summer including field trips to Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village, the Outdoor Adventure Center, Detroit Historical Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts and more. Summer will also include local enrichment partners like Bees in The D, Goldfish Swim School, Take Root and Boredom Fighters.

Field Trips and Enrichment Partners

We have a number of field trips and enrichment partner visits planned for the Summer at CFSN!

Detroit Institute of Arts

Students at our Detroit site will get the chance to walk some of the DIAs collection and try their hand at creating some art themselves!

Goldfish Swim School

Our Pontiac students will learn to swim or enhance their swimming skills! Lessons are specially designed to make learning to swim fun. Goldfish Swim Schools aims to build children’s life skills in and out of the water using play based learning in a fun and safe environment!

Bees in the D

Detroit students will hear about the lifecycle of a Honeybee and learn about the different responsibilities and roles of a Honey Bee's short life.

Boredom Fighters

At our Detroit site we will have a visit from Boredom Fighters. They teach youth to express themselves and find purpose in their communities through music and event production. Students will learn how beats are made and get an opportunity to try it out!

Tips for Avoiding that Summer Slide

When students don’t keep their minds active during summer break, they can slide backwards in academic progress. To avoid summer slide keep kids reading! Just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference in whether your student experiences summer slide. Find fun books like graphic novels or detective stories. Make sure what they are reading aligns with their specific interests. Have them write about their summer experience or keep a daily journal to write down their thoughts and feelings. Encourage them to take pictures and videos to document their summer and then write about those experiences.
