Read-a-thon

It’s just like a marathon, but with books! Oh, and it lasts all month long! Our mentors and their mentees are teaming up to see who can read the most minutes during the month of March!

If you’re a part of this literary relay,  you can submit your students’ reading minutes through the Google Form, which will be shared by the Lead Literacy Instructor or Program Coordinator at your CFSN/BD site.

Due to Spring Break, the Read-A-Thon will run from Monday, February 24th until Thursday, March 20th. Any minutes submitted prior to February 24th or after March 20th  WILL NOT be counted towards the final total.

Not a part of the Read-A-Thon, but want to be? Contact the Lead Literacy Instructor or Program Coordinator at your CFSN/BD site.

A Note for Mentors: You do not have to read the books that are on the March Book Madness Bracket with your student since Lead Literacy Instructors/Program Coordinators will play a Read Aloud video of the books for them before each mentoring session.

previous years

Each year students and mentors pair up to read the most minutes during their semi-weekly mentoring sessions. Here’s what those minutes added up to in previous years of MBM:

  • 2024: 20,514 minutes

  • 2023: 22,364 minutes

  • 2022: 19,521 minutes

  • 2021: 21,435 minutes

That’s a whole lot of minutes! Can’t wait to see where we land this year!

FAQ

Q: Is March Book Madness mandatory for students and mentors?
A: No, this is optional. You can pick and choose which activity you would like to participate in (e.g. Read-A-Thon, March Book Madness Brackets, and/or Celebration Event). Ideally we hope that all mentors/mentees at least participate in the Read-A-Thon since they already read during the sessions.  This year we will be using track minutes through a Google Form which will be sent by your site lead. It will be the same link, so mentors can also save the link for the rest of the month if you choose to submit your minutes that way. By reading with your mentee during sessions, they have the chance to win fun prizes!

Q: Are families allowed to submit reading minutes that they have completed with their student at home?
A: If mentors are not present/substitute mentors are not available for the mentoring session and the student has someone at home they can read to during that mentoring time then we will still accept those reading minutes for that day. Please have parents/caregivers text/email the site lead the total of minutes read and they can complete the form on the student's behalf with a note that the student's mentor was absent.

Q: What happens if students want to do the Read-A-Thon, but mentors do not?
A: This is unlikely, but if for some reason mentors don't want to do the Read-A-Thon but students do, then we can have directors log their minutes for them instead (If this happens, directors please make a note in the Google Form submission).

Q: Can my friends and family join?
A: Yes, this is open to mentors and others in the community as well.

Q: Does it cost money to submit the March Book Madness brackets?
A: No, there is no cost to this activity.

Q: Do I have to submit the brackets every week?
A: No, the bracket submission is a one-time thing. You would download the bracket form at the link above, fill out your guesses on the winning book, and submit it to info@center4success.org by March 6th.

Q: What is the dress code?
A: Casual.

Q: What safety precautions are in place?
A: We are following UWM’s ReImagine Recreation’s building regulations for the event. Masks will be OPTIONAL (as of 2/1/24). Please reach out if you have any specific questions or concerns at info@center4success.org.

Q: Where do I park?
A: You can park at ReImagine Recreation for free.

Q: What door do we use?
A: Use the main entrance. Upon entry, make a right turn and you should see our check in table.

Q: What if I would like to support March Book Madness financially?
A: We are not hosting any Facebook Fundraisers for this year’s March Book Madness. If you are unable to attend our celebration event, but would still like to support our programs, you may donate directly through the website at this link. You can write in the comment “March Book Madness” to have the funds contribute to this campaign.

Checks can also be mailed if that is preferred to. Please write “March Book Madness” in the memo:
