Mentoring for Equity
This workshop will serve as an introduction to the ways that history, privilege, and bias can impact our roles as mentors. We will create a brave space to discuss tough topics and to expand our understanding so that we can be better partners to our students and their families. All new mentors will be required to attend this workshop, and current mentors have the option to participate.
Leadership Conversations
As of September 2020, Staff and Board of Directors are engaging in thoughtful conversations guided by meaningful literature from a variety of authors. These sessions aim to elevate our collective knowledge of cultural diversity, historical knowledge of our student and family population, and policies and practices that have led to systematic racial injustices. Future work includes opening up Book Clubs to Local Advisory Committees and community members.
Our staff has been engaging in deep and thoughtful conversations in our monthly Equity Learning Community meetings. This is a space to discuss the breadth of topics, identities, and issues under the equity umbrella. We have covered a range of topics, including supporting LGBTQ students, moving beyond the gender binary, and what it means to truly create equitable systems and learning environments. We also took a deep dive into Paul Gorski’s article “Avoiding Racial Equity Detours,” and discussed ways that Center for Success can improve & push our organization towards true equity.
Black History Throughout the Year
We have curated resources that celebrate black history and culture for our staff and mentors to use not only in the month of February, but beyond. We are discussing ways to ensure that black identity, history, and culture are embedded into our instructional materials year-round.
